Harvest time: St Swithuns Kitchen Garden

Posted by Lewisham Gardens on October 6, 2013 at 6:05 AM

You'll find St Swithun's Church on the crest of Hither Green Lane and it is the hub of the small community. Behind the Church is a large plot over which there is always a background threat of development by the Diocese.

Rev Jane and the Jenni the gardener have set out to transform what was a scrubby lawn with a hole in the middle into a productive kitchen garden with 2 bee hives.

Almost accidently the kitchen garden is run along permaculture principles- compost making and feeding the soil early in the season is top priority. Weeding is not so important!

Audrey, a volunteer from the congregation has been instrumental in the garden having it's most productive ever year. Plus back in the spring a team of Community Paybackers (the new name for Community Service) were on site to handle the heavy work. Link to more photos
