The Big Dig 2014: Saturday 22 March
On Saturday 22nd March 2014 community gardens up and down the country will be getting their gardens ready for the new growing season. Find a garden listed below to get involved.
* Forest Hill: Horniman Primary School Allotment Project
Where: Horniman Drive, Forest Hill, SE23 3BP
A garden in a primary school set high up in Forest Hill, with a wonderful view over London. There are raised beds where the children grow vegetables, flowers and herbs and a wildlife area with a pond.
What's happening: We will be digging and weeding the raised beds to get them ready for growing and clearing a new area to put our compost bins. All help very welcome!
* Brockley Rise: St Saviour's Edible Garden
Time: 10.30am - 12pm
Where: Brockley Rise SE23 1JNUrban food growing patch outside a church in Brockley Rise.
An organic permaculture and organic food growing garden.
Digging new beds to extend the growing area.
*New Cross: Somerville Adventure Playground +Kitchen Garden
Time: 1-5pm Gardening Workshops 1-3
Where: Somerville Adventure Playground, Queens Road, New Cross SE14 5AA
This is a well-established, community based adventure playground and Youth service. Grow Wild are facilitating the development of a Kitchen Garden.
What's happening: Discover the playground, join in with a Family Gardening Workshop from 1-3 'Take Away Summer Crop Windowbox' and plants for sale.
* Telegraph Hill: Common Growth Community Garden
Where: Sandbourne Road SE4 2NS
Common Growth is a community garden in New Cross, transforming a small patch of waste ground into a productive space for food growing, for the local community. It's very informal and everyone is welcome to come and help or just enjoy the garden.
What's happening: Building raised beds, harvesting, weeding, turning compost, drawing, digging!
* Catford: Rushey Green Community Garden
Time: 12-5 pm
Where: Riverview Park, Catford, London SE6 4PL
This is a derelict allotment that has been overtaken with bramble and rubbish and plans are in place for clearing both. To make areas of the garden available for long term use of local groups to pursue their own growing interests.
Whats happening: This is an opportunity to visit, explore and discuss your view of the potential of this 3,000 m2 site. To help clear the site.
How to get there: From Catford rail stations walk along Catford Rd passing Wickes on your left. Take the next left into Exbury Rd and then into Riverview Park. After 200m at a break in the houses look for the signs for an allotment on your left. Call mobile shown for help.
* Forest Hill: Albion Millennium Green
Time: 10am - 3pm.
Where: end of Albion Villas Road SE26 4DB
An open access green with a community orchard, woods, meadows and scrubland. Regular arts events in the Spring and Summer
Whats happening: We will be pruning fruit trees, clearing pathways, preparing a new path to improve access to this site.
